Union Club is established.
April 9, 1863
Founded by John Murray Forbes and others unhappy with the Somerset Club’s Southern sympathies, it meets initially in rented rooms then moves to the former Abbott Lawrence House at 8 Park Street in December 1863. Article 1 of the Union Club bylaws states, “The condition of membership shall be unqualified loyalty to the Constitution and Union of the United States and unwavering support for the federal government in efforts for suppression of the Rebellion.” Edward Everett is the first president. Members include Oliver Wendell Holmes and Charles Eliot Norton. The club expands into the former home of John Amory Lowell at 7 Park Street in August 1896.
